Wyoming County is governed by three commissioners, who are elected every four years.  They are ultimately responsible for the fiduciary actions of the county.  There is one presiding Judge who is responsible for the judicial branch of county government.

Wyoming County has a population of just over 28.000 residents in its 23 municipalities, 18 townships, and five boroughs.  These municipalities are governed on a local level by elected officials.  Townships have three elected supervisors, while boroughs have a mayor and council government.

The commissioners offices are in the courthouse, along with many other county departments. Information is available at various offices on deeds, wills, property tax assessment, and property owners The Office of Community Planning is also located there and provides information on such matters as the requirements for a subdivision and the county’s comprehensive plan.

Our Local police departments are dedicated to serving the residents of the county There are seven municipal police departments, as well as the  Pennsylvania  State  Police  Barracks,  located in Tunkhannock, working together to keep our communities safe.  The largest and oldest of the seven is the Tunkhannock Borough Police Department, which is very proactive within the community sponsoring programs such as the D.A.R.E. program; the PAL (police athletic league) program, designed for youth, and the Shop-With-A-Cop program.  They have also sponsored civic projects including the Town Clock, a gazebo and two basketball courts, which are located in one of our parks. 

Twelve volunteer fire companies throughout the county provide fire protection and emergency response services, including FWM Fire Co Factoryville Fire Co., Goodwill Fire Co., Kunkle Fire Co., Lake Carey Fire Co, Lake Winola Fire Co., Meshoppen Fire Co, Nicholson Fire Co Northmoreland Township Fire Co., Noxen Fire Co., Springville Fire Co. and Triton Hose Co. These dedicated volunteers sponsor many educational and fundraising programs for the community throughout the year, such as fire safety, carnivals, dinners and more.

The Wyoming County Courthouse is located in the county seat of Tunkhannock.  The building was originally constructed in 1843 and was the first brick building in town.  The courthouse has undergone two major renovations since then.  The stucco covering was added in 1870, along with the impressive clock tower. A final addition was completed in 1992.
